Production of Refined and Modified Closed-Cell Aluminum Foams by Melt-Foaming Method

Closed-cell A356 aluminum alloy foams refined and modified were successfully fabricated by using barite calcium carbonate as thickening foaming agents, respectively. A melt treatment consisting of adding master alloys Al-5Ti-1B Al-10Sr for refining the dendritic microstructure modifying primary eutectic silicon, respectively, included in process. The mechanical properties manufactured analyzed compared with produced without treatments. secondary arm spacing (SDAS) was determined optical measurements. Lower SDAS values obtained foam regions closer to mold walls due high solidification rate imposed during cooling step a decrease addition evident. Additionally, caused formation solid solution dendrites fine irregular fibrous form silicon. Foams exhibit good combination structure properties. Therefore, route established is feasible way improve performance where lowest highest closed-cell produced.
